Newcastle news: Mike Ashley to take Rafa Benitez and struggling Newcastle squad to dinner this week
MIKE ASHLEY will take Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez and his players to dinner this week in a bid to build bridges.
Toon owner Ashley attended his first game at St James’ Park in 16 months on Saturday.
But he witnessed the club continue their dismal start to the campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Leicester.
The Magpies remain winless and have collected just two points from their opening seven matches.
Newcastle boss Benitez is out of contract in the summer.
And he is refusing to sign a new deal because of Ashley’s lack of investment.
But the Sports Direct boss is keen to keep him.
Ashley’s renewed interest in his club comes while ex-Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has enquired about buying it.
Kenyon has spoken to Ashley’s lawyers.
However he is yet to make a bid for the North East strugglers.
